Black TiO2 is a versatile material that finds many applications in the field of photocatalysis but also in energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors. In this work, a new method is developed for the synthesis of black TiO2 in the form of nanotubes. Amorphous TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) are annealed...
Chemical reactions involving co-deposits in plasma facing components will occur under heat loads. Previous experiments in the Be-C-O system evidenced that compound formation may induce by itself the peel-off of deposits when C films are annealed in vacuum due to the simultaneous formation and mixing...
UMB4 (M = V, Cr, Fe, Co, Mo, W, Re, Os) materials prepared by arc-melting have UMB4 as the main phase, with (V, Cr, Fe, Co) crystallising in the YCrB4 structure type, while (Mo, W, Re, Os) adopt the ThMoB4-type. For M = V, Cr, Mo, W the magnetic susceptibility is low and only weakly temperature...
Equiatomic high entropy alloys (HEA) have attracted considerable interest due to their exceptional properties, which might be closely related to their extreme disorder induced by chemical complexity. We have sputtered thin films of CrFeCoNiCu onto insulating and optically transparent substrates in...
Oxide-containing films were made by reactively sputtering a high-entropy alloy target of CrFeCoNiCu. We report on a wide range of changes to the electrical properties made by different heat treatments in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. We combine temperature-dependent Hall effect...
For assembly of MEMS by use of soldering, the metallization on the MEMS and the soldering process must be selected carefully to ensure long-term reliable joints. A range of combinations of adhesion metal layers and solders were tested in this work. The target was to find a metallization system for...
Ceramic oxygen separation membranes can be utilized to reduce CO2 emissions in fossil fuel power generation cycles based on oxy-fuel combustion. State-of-the-art oxygen permeable membranes based on Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF) offer high oxygen permeability but suffer from long-term instability...
A pH drop during the inflammatory phase during bone regeneration can cause corrosion in TiO2 bone scaffolds and the loss of compressive strength. Corrosion as ion leaching and dissolution is confined to grain boundaries. Cationic doping of TiO2 showed to increase the compressive strength but...
The present work reports charging effects and surface potential variations in pure copper, cuprous oxide and cupric oxide nanowires observed by electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). The copper nanowires were produced by wet synthesis, oxidation into cuprous...
Predicting crystal structure information is a challenging problem in materials science that clearly benefits from artificial intelligence approaches. The leading strategies in machine learning are notoriously data-hungry and although a handful of large crystallographic databases are currently...
Amorphous TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) grown anodically on Ti metal in aqueous electrolytes show a crystallization behaviour strongly dependent on the atmosphere used during annealing at high temperature. In wet oxidizing conditions, the amorphous TNTs walls transform into relatively large and well...
Composite coatings containing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane functionalised rGO (APTES-rGO) were prepared by sol–gel technology and deposited on Al 2024 T-3. Covalent functionalisation of GO by APTES occurred by formation of amide bonds, accompanied by GO reduction...
Fourteen alloys of the FeCoNiAlxMnx system were processed by laser metal deposition (LMD). The feedstock was a weighted and proportional blend of the containing elemental powders, targeting the nominal alloy compositions. Prior to processing, the composition and particle characteristics of the...
Water photoelectrolysis has the potential to produce renewable hydrogen fuel, therefore addressing the intermittent nature of sunlight. Herein, a monolithic, photovoltaic (PV)-assisted water electrolysis device of minimal engineering and of low (in the μg range) noble-metal-free catalysts loading is...
Abstract Atomic ordering in single-crystal β –Cu–Zn–Al, relevant to the martensitic transformation and functional properties, is investigated using analytical STEM. Atomic-resolution EDS along the [110] zone axis, where all Wyckoff positions are spatially resolved, reveals three chemically distinct...
Proton ceramic electrochemical cells PCECs hold promise for efficient, sustainable production and use of hydrogen. The positive electrodes are mixed proton conducting perovskites that facilitate water splitting and oxygen reduction, but the factors that determine the protonation are poorly under...
The ZnCr2O4/ZnO materials system has a wide range of potential applications, for example, as a photocatalytic material for waste-water treatment and gas sensing. In this study, probe-corrected high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and geometric phase analysis were utilized to...
In this study, a lab-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), simulating biological treatment, received 10 μg/L Ag and 100 μg/L TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) for 5 weeks. NP partitioning was evaluated by size fractionation (>0.7 μm, 0.1−0.7 μm, 3 kDa-0.1 μm, < 3 kDa) using inductively coupled plasma...
In this study, laser-treated polycrystalline Si (pc-Si) wafers, fabricated by wire sawing of hot-pressed ingots sintered from Si powder, have been investigated. As-cut wafers and those with high-quality thin Si layers deposited on top of them by e-beam have been subjected to laser irradiation to...
