Impact of changing climate on infrastructure in Longyearbyen: Stability of foundations on slope terrain – case study (FST)

Assessment of vulnerability of selected infrastructures in Longyearbyen due to projected changes in climate will be performed within the project. Projected climate change will be assumed to correspond to RCP8.5 scenario with highest greenhouses gas emission. Bearing capacity and serviceability analysis of pile foundations of existing buildings on slope terrain will be investigated within the project. Analysis will be performed using analytical solutions and numerical tools. First field work for data collection on soil parameters was performed in March 2017.

The project will examine possibilities of impoving capasities of existing typical foundations via parametric study. One can consider the foreseen results of the project as a step towards development of guidelines for design of foundations in conditions of frozen ground on slope terrain in Longyearbyen.
