Community engagement has increasingly been recognized as one of most important pillars to support the work of mainstreaming sustainable and regenerative neighbourhoods to better our built environment.

However, Community engagement is easier said than done as it must necessarily involve many actors from different disciplines and should arguably include voices of the typically unheard. Furthermore, community engagement unfolds very differently in dissimilar trajectories under diverse contexts across Europe.

Whereas societies with low climate literacy are hampered by lack of information and awareness about deep renovation solutions and how they benefit day-to-day living, societies with advanced climate and energy literacy need to work in other ways to win over people’s hearts and minds when it comes to trust and confidence in deep renovations on a neighbourhood scale.

Drawing insights from ongoing research projects, this workshop asks: What are the community engagement practices in a high climate and energy literacy society like Norway, where are the hidden challenges, and where are the low-hanging opportunities? A particular focus will be on how our youth segment of the population can meaningfully be part of the built environment transformation.

Participants will be introduced to the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method in this bilingual workshop (Norwegian and English) to share and reflect on insights, ideas and meaningful discussions. Together, we will explore more systematic ways to do community engagement considering time and cost intensities, as well as approaches to better equip practitioners to tackle the challenges of addressing multi-stakeholder environments.
