Would you like to use electrochemistry to develop more sustainable routes to chemicals, materials and circular processes? Do you enjoy laboratory experimentation and are interested in automation?
SINTEF Industry is looking for a Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist in Exprimental Electrochemical Conversion for the research group Functional Materials and Chemistry (FMK) in Oslo. This is a permanent position. We are looking for a hands-on electrochemist who can contribute in the laboratory, and increase our portfolio of electrochemical research activities.
FMK is a multidisciplinary research group with expertise in organic and inorganic chemistry, functional materials, catalysis, analysis, process development and laboratory automation. Our electrochemistry activities have been under development for approximately eight years and are integrated into this broader chemistry environment. We often explore electrochemistry as one of several approaches to solve chemical, environmental and industrial challenges. Our research is focused on sustainable chemistry, biomass conversion, utilisation of CO2, waste and side streams, synthesis, functional materials and automated experimentation.
Main responsibilities
You will contribute to:
-
planning, performing, documenting and troubleshooting electrochemical experiments
-
using strong fundamental electrochemical understanding to interpret results and improve experimental design
-
combining electrochemical measurements with chemical and material analysis
-
collaborating with colleagues, industry and research partners in multidisciplinary projects
-
contributing to automated, data-rich and reproducible workflows where relevant
-
reporting, publishing and presenting results
-
developing new research ideas and contributing to project proposals and collaborations
For appointment as Senior Research Scientist, we will place greater emphasis on experience with project development, proposal writing, scientific leadership, mentoring and network building. For appointment as Research Scientist, we will place greater emphasis on strong experimental competence, scientific potential and motivation to grow into these responsibilities.
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with:
-
a PhD in electrochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or a related field, or an MSc with strong relevant experience from industry, a research institute or applied research
-
documented hands-on experience with electrochemical laboratory work
-
strong fundamental understanding of electrochemical methods, reactions and data interpretation
-
the ability to plan experiments, interpret results critically and solve practical laboratory challenges both independently and in collaboration with colleagues
-
very good written and oral English skills, minimum B2 level
Desired qualifications
It is an advantage if you have experience with one or more of the following:
-
organic synthesis and green chemistry principles
-
Python programming for data analysis, experimental control, automation or workflow integration - this will be a particularly strong advantage
-
applied or industrial research, project development or publicly funded research projects
Personal qualities
We believe you will thrive with us if you:
-
enjoy practical laboratory work
-
are proactive, systematic and able to deliver
-
see opportunities and can develop them into realistic research concepts
-
collaborate well in multidisciplinary teams
-
communicate constructively with colleagues, project partners and customers
-
are motivated by both scientific quality and practical societal and industrial impact
-
want to develop a long-term career in SINTEF
We offer
-
a permanent position as Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist, depending on qualifications and experience
-
a central role in further developing electrochemical conversion in FMK
-
support from experienced colleagues in related research areas
-
a bottom-up research culture where researchers have the freedom to develop their ideas into projects through competitive funding
-
good opportunities for professional and personal development, including development towards scientific leadership and management over time
-
projects in close collaboration with industry, research partners and colleagues across SINTEF
-
competitive salary and excellent welfare, pension and insurance schemes
-
car parking and a heated bicycle garage at Forskningsveien 1
The workplace is Oslo, Forskningsveien 1. The position is laboratory based, and regular presence on site is expected. Some project-related travel should be expected.
For candidates relocating to Norway, SINTEF can provide practical support through Onboard Norway, including support related to work and residence permits, settling in Oslo, and Norwegian language courses.
Application
Please write your application in English. It should include a cover letter (max. 300 words), CV, diplomas/certificates and, if relevant, a publication list. In the cover letter, you are welcome to briefly describe research interests and electrochemical conversion topics you would be motivated to develop with us.
We encourage you to apply if you have the required experimental electrochemical foundation and want to build our electrochemical conversion research area with us.
SINTEF is obliged to comply with Norwegian laws and regulations on export control, security and sanctions. This may affect the processing of applications.
