Skogul crude oil – properties and weathering at sea - In relation to oil spill response - OC2020 A-143

Sammendrag

A weathering study including dispersibility testing has been conducted on Skogul crude oil. The study comprised a standardized small-scale laboratory - and a meso-scale flume testing conducted at 13 °C. In addition, dispersants have been tested simulating subsea dispersant injection (SSDI) on a subsea release of oil in the SINTEF Minitower. The SINTEF Oil Weathering Model (OWM) was used to predict the weathering properties of Skogul crude oil if spilled on the sea surface reflecting the relevant seawater temperature in the North Sea. The weathering properties are discussed in relation to oil spill response by mechanical containment and recovery, and chemical dispersant application.
