Prediction of Wave Impact on Offshore Installations in Extreme Storms

Sammendrag

Hydrodynamic impact from extreme waves on offshore installations in severe storms is addressed. The problem is characterized by very complex physics that is hard to model and predict accurately by standard theoretical methods, and numerical tools are still uncertain. Model testing is generally needed for design load estimation and verification. An approach for improved wave impact prediction, based on a rational combination of analytical tools and model testing, is described in this paper. Hence, new knowledge and robust methods for engineering prediction of platform air-gap, deck impact and related problems in irregular waves are being developed. Wave amplification and upwelling near large-volume structures is included. Comparisons to theoretical methods are made, and simplified adjustments are made. The results are being implemented into practical methodology with guidelines.
