This document describes the prelimenary design of the spar buoy for the NOWERI floating
experimental wind turbine.
The objective ofthis work was to establish a cost estimate of the floating substrueture for the NOWERI
application. The dimensioning is based on a simplified approach using the optimization tool in Excel.
The design variables comprise the spar buoy geometry and ballasting. Constraints to be satisfied were
hydrostatie stability and restrictions on natural periods in heave and pitch modes of motions. Statie and
dynamic responses due to wind and wave loads were not considered at this stage
