Do you want to work on research challenges in acoustics with real-world, practical applications?
With us, you will work on modelling and analysis of acoustic problems, ranging from the development and implementation of sound propagation models to the analysis of measurement data and the development of robust tools. You will become part of a strong professional environment that works closely with clients and partners and applies research to real-world challenges. You will also contribute to identifying and formulating research problems and developing new R&D projects.
About us
The Acoustics group is located in Trondheim, Norway. The group conducts research within communication, environmental, industry, and underwater applications. Research areas include: anthropogenic noise, listening to nature, hearing health, technology for hearing-impaired people, speech processing and analysis, non-destructive testing, integrity monitoring, and underwater acoustics.
We develop methods and tools that are used in practice, in close collaboration with industry, public sector bodies, and research partners. Our work includes, among other things:
- Development of computational methods and tools for assessing noise and sound propagation
- Signal and data processing to improve acoustic measurements and development of new analysis methods
- Development of acoustic sensors and acoustic-based measurement systems
Our professional environment covers the entire value chain, from measurements and experiments to modelling, computation, development of operational tools, and evaluation with human subjects. We participate in national and international research and innovation projects, often in close collaboration with clients and partners.
Why are we recruiting now?
Our project portfolio is growing, and we need to strengthen the group’s capacity.
Several of our projects require expertise in the development and implementation of sound and vibration propagation models and technical computational tools, for example related to noise from transport and industry, as well as analysis of sound sources and sound propagation in air and other media. This creates a strong need for expertise at the intersection of classical acoustics, numerical methods, software development, and data-driven methods, including AI.
At the same time, we aim to strengthen our ability to initiate and develop new R&D projects, from early idea phases and consortium building to proposal preparation and scientific leadership.
Who are you?
We are looking for someone who wants to work in applied research and can combine theoretical understanding with practical implementation. You have education, background and expertise covering one or more of the following:
- MSc or PhD in acoustics, physics, mathematics, engineering cybernetics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field
- Expertise in acoustics and wave propagation, numerical methods and model implementation, signal processing of acoustic data, and programming (Python, MATLAB, C#, Fortran, or similar).
- Experience with, or strong interest in, AI/ML applied to acoustics or elastic waves.
Additionally, we want someone with the following experience and personal qualities:
- An analytical and structured working style, with the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
- Clear and precise communication skills, and good proficiency in English and Norwegian (or motivation to learn Norwegian)
- Experience with or interest in the development of R&D projects, such as idea development, partner dialogue, and proposal writing.
- Competence and interest in project management and scientific coordination.
- Experience from academia and/or R&D projects in industry is also beneficial.
What we offer
- Work on applied research projects with real impact on society and industry
- Opportunities to develop and apply methods and tools that are used in practice
- Close collaboration with clients, partners, and leading professional environments
- A flexible workday with strong opportunities for professional development
- A strong, interdisciplinary competence environment
- Norwegian language training for international candidates
- Competitive terms and excellent pension and insurance schemes
SINTEF values diversity and encourages all qualified candidates to apply regardless of background, age, gender, or need for workplace accommodations. We believe that diversity creates a stronger and more innovative working environment.
