Researcher or Senior Researcher in Additive Manufacturing of Metals

Researcher or Senior Researcher in Additive Manufacturing of Metals

SINTEF Manufacturing seek Researcher or Senior Researcher in Metal Additive Manufacturing

For more than 70 years, our research has delivered innovation and revolutionary solutions for the society and our clients around the globe. It has made SINTEF to one of the most popular employers in Norway. As an important team member with us, you get trust, challenging tasks and a good opportunity for professional and personal development.

Welcome to SINTEF - Technology for a better society.

SINTEF Manufacturing has been at the forefront of developing solutions for industrial applications and assisting the implementation of metal additive manufacturing in the Norwegian industry since the early 2000s. We are now looking to expand our team with a new colleague to work within additive manufacturing technology. Currently, we are applying Directed Energy Deposition methods for new parts production, repair, and refurbishment of large components. We also specialize in Powder Bed Fusion, where we have ongoing projects with both aerospace and process industry. The group is proud to develop a multi-material solution for Powder Bed Fusion that is based on electrostatics.

The scope of topics associated with this position includes:

  • Using state-of-the-art metrology systems including 3D-scanning and vision- based systems, to identify and describe localized failure modes and wear.
  • Develop and investigate AM processing strategies.
  • Investigate and implement hybrid solutions, combining AM with machining, heat treatment and finishing operations.
  • Investigate and understand how material properties are affected by each process step and develop the desired microstructure for the parts produced by AM.
  • Investigate mechanical properties and anisotropic behaviour in AM-parts.
  • Investigate the transition zone between the existing part and the built part in hybrid manufacturing and repair.
  • Look into topics of multi-material blending zones in cases of lifetime improvement through remanufacturing.
  • Simulation, topology optimization, CNC programming, robot control.

Qualifications:

A PhD or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Technology with good results is required.

The position will include working with metal powders in a production laboratory.  It is expected that the applicant performs testing in industrial additive manufacturing machines. We, therefore, seek a candidate with a practical mindset and who enjoys spending time in the laboratory.

We seek a candidate with a background in these areas, prioritized by order:

  • Additive manufacturing, preferably in metals
  • Melt pool physics
  • Machining physics
  • Solid state mechanics
  • Materials science

In addition, emphasis is placed on:

  • Experience with metallurgical characterization techniques such as thermal analysis, advanced microscopy and DIC and quantitative analysis of data from these methods.
  • Experience with and/or motivation to connect scientific work and results to applications.
  • Good written and oral presentation skills in Norwegian and/or English.
  • Capability to work independently and proactively.

The application must include the following:

  • A short statement explaining the candidate's experience and interest in the research topic, and describing how the candidate’s education and background provide a relevant background for the research project (maximum 1/2 page)
  • A CV that includes information about education background and work experience
  • Certified copies of relevant transcripts and diplomas. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or similar documentation that describes in detail the study program, the grading system, and the rights to further studies associated with the degree obtained.
  • Any relevant publications. Joint work will only be considered provided that a short summary outlining the applicant's contributions is attached.
  • Contact information for two references.
