Smart Data develops technologies and methods that make data accessible, understandable and actionable across organisations, sectors and digital ecosystems. We combine semantic technologies, data spaces, artificial intelligence and secure data pipelines to help industry and the public sector create value from data through interoperability, trust and data-driven innovation.

Our expertise

The Smart Data research group develops technologies for secure, scalable and interoperable data sharing across organisations and sectors. We investigate how data can flow efficiently without compromising ownership, control or regulatory compliance. 
 
Our core expertise includes Data Spaces and Data Ecosystems, semantic interoperability, industrial ontologies, Knowledge Graphs and Semantic Technologies, intelligent Data Pipelines, and Data-Driven Digital Twins. We develop solutions that connect data, processes and AI, enabling robust digital ecosystems and new data-driven services. 

An important research area is Compliance by Design, where we develop methods that embed regulatory requirements directly into data and AI pipelines to support automated documentation, compliance and governance throughout the lifecycle.  

Our domains include manufacturing, energy, transport, aviation, healthcare and the maritime sector. 

How we work

We combine applied research with practical technology development through research projects, pilots and co-creation with users, customers and partners. This helps us understand real-world needs and validate solutions in operational environments.
 
Our work builds on interdisciplinary expertise in software engineering, artificial intelligence, semantic technologies and systems architecture. The Smart Data Research Group plays a leading role in European research and innovation projects on data spaces, semantic interoperability, AI governance and digital ecosystems. Our researchers lead work packages and technology development in major EU projects and actively contribute to international standards, reference architectures and frameworks for responsible data sharing and AI.
