Through research and interdisciplinary collaboration, we contribute to strengthening society’s ability to prevent, manage, and recover from crises, ensuring that critical functions can be maintained under extraordinary conditions. We consolidate and further develop SINTEF’s cross-disciplinary expertise to enhance societal resilience, that is, the capacity to prevent, withstand, and rapidly restore functionality after crises and unwanted incidents.
Emergency preparedness and defense are closely interconnected through the concept of total defense. The goal is to support robust societal functions through knowledge, technology, flexible measures, and solutions that enable rapid recovery when incidents occur. With interdisciplinary expertise in areas such as energy, buildings and infrastructure, transport, oceans, industry, digitalization, and cybersecurity, SINTEF develops holistic solutions that strengthen preparedness across sectors.
From insight to action
Effective preparedness is built on knowledge. SINTEF maps risk and vulnerability, analyzes dependencies between critical societal functions, and develops decision support that makes it easier to prioritize the right measures. We develop knowledge, tools, and innovations that help authorities, businesses, and civil society understand risk, build resilience, and act earlier and more effectively.
We develop methods and digital tools that provide improved situational awareness and decision support. At the same time, we conduct research on how critical infrastructure, supply chains, and digital systems are interconnected, enabling the reduction of vulnerabilities and the strengthening of coordination.
Digitalization creates new opportunities, but also new threats. Therefore, we develop solutions in digital preparedness and cybersecurity that protect critical systems and help ensure that essential societal functions are maintained.
