The current geopolitical situation means that the boundaries between civilian and military sectors are increasingly blurred. This places new demands on know-how, technology and collaboration.
SINTEFs efforts in the defence domain are rooted in our societal mission: Technology for a better society. We view defence capability as part of a comprehensive, total defence, where military capacities, civilian preparedness and the business sector’s ability to adapt and deliver, operate in concert.
SINTEF is a Norwegian, independent, civilian research institute. We combine high technological expertise with systems understanding and extensive experience of translating research into practice.
We operate at the intersection between civilian and military innovation – from early-stage technology development, to testing, verification and industrialisation – often within ‘dual use’ frameworks, where technology can be adopted to both civil and military applications.
With strong research communities, advanced laboratories and test facilities, and close collaboration with national and international defence industry, the Norwegian Armed Forces, public authorities and European partners, we help to reduce risk and shorten the path from identified need to operational solution.
What we offer
By collaborating with SINTEF, you gain access to new and relevant partners in Norway and its allies. When complex challenges are to be addressed, we mobilise strong consortia in which start-ups and SMEs are connected with established industry to develop new and scalable value chains.
We support technology development across the entire technology readiness level (RTL) scale and are an active partner throughout the journey from laboratory to market and operational use.
SINTEF has long and well-documented experience within defence, security and emergency preparedness. We are Norway’s largest actor in open research on sensitive technologies.
Defence-related research at SINTEF is conducted within clear ethical, legal and security frameworks. We have a dedicated policy that emphasises responsible technology development, compliance with national and international regulations, export control, and thorough assessments of societal benefit and risk.
At the same time, we safeguard openness, academic integrity and the individual’s right to opt out. It is within this framework that SINTEF provides knowledge and solutions that strengthen defence capability, preparedness and society’s resilience – in Norway and in cooperation with our allies.
