SafeBESS: Technology and building design for safe operation of battery energy storage systems

- New data from the SafeBESS project is published in the Fire Safety Journal. This scientific work is a collaboration between SINTEF, NTNU and RISE Fire Research which investigates development of thermal runaway in battery modules.
- Fire safety challenges with photovoltaics and Li-ion battery system installations in buildings are addressed in this paper, including advice on important aspects to consider for safe installation of PV and BESS.
- A risk- and vulnerability analysis of fire in battery room in Norwegian school describes how a risk analysis can be done, which aspect are considered and their degree of risk and hazard.
- A case study of ventilation solutions and strategies for Li-ion battery rooms provides data from several BESS installations and the ventilation strategies utilized. The ventilation strategies are assessed according to what is considered best practice for safe operation of BESS.

- Fire behaviour tests for lithium ion batteries a literature review
- Results from the PhD project connected to SafeBESS have been presented at the conference International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS), which was organized in Tsukuba, Japan, in October 2023. The work was done by Cristina Sanfeliu Meliá, and the results were presented as a poster by her main supervisor Prof. Anne-Elise Steen Hansen from NTNU.

- Effect of heating rates on thermal runaway and gas composition in large Li-ion battery cell formats – an experimental study
- Data from SafeBESS has recently been published in the journal Process Safety and Environmental Protection. This scientific paper describes experimental testing on Li-ion battery cells in two different formats (pouch and prismatic) and analysis of results from the fire testing. Here, we show amounts and types of gases developed under thermal runaway and temperature evolution is measure and analysed.
