WP6 Oxyfuel modelling and optimisation

The clinker product quality characterised by the mineralogical phase composition strongly depends on the temperature profiles in the kiln system. Due to the counter current flow of material and gas the different plant units of the kiln system: preheating, calcining, clinker burning and cooling interfere with each other. Due to the changed gas atmosphere in the kiln plant during oxyfuel mode, this sensitive system has to be adapted to ensure a good product quality.

Whereas calcination, burning and cooling are separately addressed in the prototype tests, this work package combines all of them (WP7-9). Modelling of the whole process based on the layout developed within the ECRA CCS project allows evaluating and optimising the overall performance (energy demand, flue gas compositions etc.) taking into account the experimental results (e.g. flame characteristics, reaction kinetics of the calcination under high CO2 partial pressures, cooling curve).

VDZ has developed a model of the clinker burning process in previous projects, which also delivers performance data for the reference plant as described in the CEMCAP framework document developed in WP3 . A simulation study based on the prototype testing results will cover a set of parameters to identify an optimum operational mode for clinker production. Moreover the overall energy efficiency will be optimised through improved heat integration (waste heat recovery from CO2 processing unit, air separation unit and other sources).
