Vortex-Induced Vibrations

When flow pasts cylindrical offshore structures, vortices are generated and shedding into the wake, cyclic vortex force will cause vibrations of the structures; such vibrations are called vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). Marine structures such as risers, pipelines and umbilical cables are subjected to ocean currents and suffer VIV. VIV can lead to fast accumulation of the fatigue damage and amplified drag loads. As water depths increases, VIV behaviour presents one of the most severe difficulties facing the designers. SINTEF Ocean and NTNU have more than 30 years experience on research of VIV, providing solutions for the industry.
