When customers experience outages that last for more than 12 hours, they are entitled to receive compensation from the network operator. Today, the customers must proactively notify the network operator if experiencing such long outages and, depending on the type of outage, the outages duration may only be estimated. This demonstrator will automate the process of detecting affected customers based on measured, rather than estimated outages durations.

The smart meters in Norway save a log containing all power outages it has experienced. From this log, customers who has experienced outages exceeding 12 hours can be identified and compensated. In this demonstrator, the time resolution of the data is important, but the analysis does not need to be real-time and it can be conducted after the outage has ended.
