The helicopter safety study initiated in 2016 is the last in a series of comprehensive studies conducted on the Norwegian continental shelf. The first study (HSS-1) covered the period 1966–1990, the second (HSS-2) covered the period 1990–1998 and the third (HSS-3) covered the period 1999–2009. The current study (HSS-3b) covers the period from 2009 to 2015, and also look into future developments.

The study is carried out by safety researchers at SINTEF Technology and Society on behalf of Norwegian Oil and Gas. Sixteen petroleum companies contribute, in addition to the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority and the trade union Industri Energi.
