SOS-ZEROPOL2030 will co-design, co-produce, and co-deliver a stakeholder lead European Seas zero-pollution framework that provides practical guidance from source to sea addressing shortcomings in marine pollution management and governance.
This holistic approach is based on best practice, emphasises human behaviour, socioeconomics and governance; and is underpinned by understanding of current barriers to effective and efficient prevention, reduction, mitigation and monitoring of marine pollution in European Seas:
- To better understand the barriers that compromise successful marine pollution management and stakeholder participation
- To capitalise upon best practices concerning the implementation of sustainable and effective measures that address marine pollution
- To engage stakeholders through a joint knowledge production
- To provide practical guidelines
- To co-develop a practical roadmap that will guide the blue green transition needed
- To generate societal impact and raise widespread awareness of how marine pollution can be addressed
Integrated case study pollutant assessments (work package 4)
Led by: Andy Booth, SINTEF
The overarching aim of Work Package 4 is to develop scientifically robust and transparent assessment methodologies for 2 case study pollutants (PFAS and TWP) and apply them, in close collaboration with the Living Labs process (WP3), to create a series of scenarios that will feed into the development of WP5 Framework, Roadmap and a set of Guidelines for achieving zero pollution.
Building blocks for zero pollution governance (work package 2)
SINTEF contributions by: Emily Cowan
Work Package 2 will provide an overview of Zero Pollution governance in the EU including relevant legislation and policy processes and European Commission communications. It will provide insights on the main gaps and obstacles causing a discrepancy between the as-is situation and the desired environmental situation for selected priority pollutants, and identify opportunities and best practices for improving the implementation of EU policies and legislation.
