DBS - Dynamic Borehole Stability while drilling in shales

The overall objective of DBS is to obtain better real time prediction of time dependent borehole stability in shales by accounting for operationally induced borehole dynamic effects

Contact person

The basic strategy is generally to link practical borehole instabilities in shales to rock mechanical failure, based on an understanding of which physical and chemical processes are relevant in a shale, how they may be quantified, and finally how to utilize them when evaluating borehole instability. Particular focus is placed on the influence of operationally induced, dynamic mud weights and of drillstring operations on borehole stability in practice, using dedicated laboratory tests.
