Laboratories

The maritime energy systems laboratory

The maritime energy systems laboratory

Our maritime energy systems laboratory is unique in its capabilities as a research facility. We offer a system architecture that will accommodate any power system or component on ships, with the ability to build complex hybrid systems.

Marine Structures Laboratory

Marine Structures Laboratory

The main activities in the laboratory for marine structures are the testing of structures, structural components and materials. Typical problems involve fatigue testing, ultimate strength and collapse testing. Experimental work is often combined with...

Marine Cybernetics Laboratory

Marine Cybernetics Laboratory

The Marine Cybernetics Laboratory is a wave basin, especially suited for tests of marine control systems, due to the relatively small size and advanced instrumentation package. It is also suitable for more specialized hydrodynamic tests (for example...

Towing Tank

Towing Tank

The main activity of the towing tanks is related to investigation of hydrodynamic performance of ships. This includes resistance, propulsion, seakeeping in head and following seas, and directional stability tests with free running models. The tanks...

Cavitation Tunnel

Cavitation Tunnel

The cavitation tunnel is used to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of different type of ship hulls, propulsors and other hydrodynamic objects. Propeller induced pressure fluctuations and noise as well as cavitation are investigated by means of...

Ocean Laboratory

Ocean Laboratory

The Ocean Basin Laboratory is used for basic as well as applied research on marine structures and operations. A total environmental simulation including wind, waves and current offers a unique possibility for testing of models in realistic conditions...

Projects

Safe and Cost Effective Operation of Flexible Pipes

Safe and Cost Effective Operation of Flexible Pipes

Start:

In order to improve reliability related to operation of flexible risers there is need for cooperation, improvements and systematic work. The starting point should be an industry consensus of what is the current status and secondly promote and obtain...

Hybrid Model Testing for Extreme Marine Environments

Hybrid Model Testing for Extreme Marine Environments

Start:
End:

Real-Time Hybrid Model Testing is the science of combining advanced simulations, state-of-the-art experimental methods with active control system into a novel approach, to verify the safety and efficiency of marine structures and operations.

Validation of shiphandling simulation models (SimVal)

Validation of shiphandling simulation models (SimVal)

Start:

Important work on the validation of shiphandling manoeuvring models is being conducted in the R&D project SimVal (“Sea Trials and Model Tests for Validation of Shiphandling Simulation Models”, founded by the Research Council of Norway).

Emergency landings for helicopters

Emergency landings for helicopters

Start:

Helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland has been carrying out model tests in our ship-model tank in order to study emergency landings on water and helicopters’ subsequent seaworthiness. Very few test facilities anywhere in the world perform tests of...

Unmanned ships of the future

Unmanned ships of the future

Start:

The European Union project MUNIN (Maritime Unmanned Navigation through intelligence in Networks) is studying the possibilities of realising a completely unmanned ship by looking at the need for new sensor systems, improved maintenance methods...

New ocean energy concepts

New ocean energy concepts

Start:

SINTEF is involved in projects concerning novel concepts and innovative solutions for ocean energy, such as DeepWind and FAROFF, supported by the European Union and the Research Council of Norway.

Reduced VOC emissions from crude oil transport

Reduced VOC emissions from crude oil transport

Start:

Much of Norway's production of crude oil is transported by ship. Particularly during loading, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from the ship's cargo tanks to the atmosphere.
