This is an event focused specifically on research on SDG Target 14.4, to effectively regulate harvesting, and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and destructive fishing practices.
The topic is automatic catch registration in all fisheries – from recreational and small scale fisheries to long-distance fleets operating beyond EU waters, and the role of sensors and technology, co-collaboration with fishers and powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). These technological advancements will allow fishers to automatically register catch data in real-time onboard fishing vessels.
The exciting part of the research and development of this technology, supported by EU-funded Horizon Europe projects, is that in addition to involvement of scientists and technology developers throughout Europe, the innovation projects also include integrated fisher engagement, and Fisheries Directorates throughout Europe involved as both research and innovation partners and in advisory roles - to ensure pragmatic uptake by both industry and policy makers – ensuring that it will be an effective measure against IUU fishing, as well as an effective reporting tool for the fishers.
