- emergency preparedness and crisis management
Our clients and partners operate in sectors such as energy, maritime, process industry, transport, healthcare, defense, and the public sector.
How we work
Our work combines research-based methods with practical experience from industry and the public sector. The research group often works in interdisciplinary projects where safety scientists, social scientists, and domain experts collaborate. Our expertise spans the entire lifecycle—from early concept development and risk analysis to implementation, testing, and evaluation.
Close dialogue with users, regulators, and industry partners is essential to our work. This ensures that our results are scientifically robust, operationally relevant, and tailored to real needs and decision-making processes.
What sets us apart?
What distinguishes our research group is our ability to view safety and reliability in an integrated way—across technology, people, and organizations.
We combine strong research expertise with in-depth understanding of how safety-critical systems function in practice. This enables us to contribute both strategically and operationally, whether addressing regulatory requirements, developing new technology, or managing complex risk and safety challenges.
A key part of our research focuses on the interaction between people, technology, and organizations, learning from incidents, and how organizations and societies can build robustness and adaptability in the face of uncertainty, crises, and rapid change. Through research on societal resilience, safety culture, decision support, and organizational learning, we help strengthen prevention, preparedness, and the ability to manage and learn from unwanted events.
The research group also has a strong position in safety-critical software and functional safety, including work related to standards such as IEC 61508 and IEC 61511. At the same time, we address emerging challenges related to AI safety, resilience, autonomous systems, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure.
Safety and Reliability leads and manages several industry forums, where we connect research, industry, and authorities to share experiences, learn from each other, and develop knowledge and solutions that enhance safety, reliability, and sustainable value creation for the benefit of industry and society.
An international environment
The research group participates in a wide range of international research and innovation projects, including EU-funded initiatives and collaborations with leading research environments in Europe.
We collaborate with international partners in safety, software development, energy, transport, and industrial digitalization. Our researchers also contribute to standardization efforts, expert groups, and professional networks related to safety-critical systems and functional safety.
Knowledge and methods developed within the research group are used by both Norwegian and international organizations with high requirements for safe operations and documented reliability.
