Our expertise
The Cyber Security research group conducts research on how digital systems can be developed, operated and used in a secure and robust manner. We combine deep technological expertise with an understanding of organisational factors, risk and societal needs.
Our research team contributes to a society where we can trust digital services, communicate securely on digital platforms, and live in a digitalised world without compromising privacy.
Our main research areas include:
- Security risk management
- Security architectures and communication solutions
- Software security
- Security monitoring and security metrics
- Threat intelligence and threat modelling
- Security awareness and training
- Resilience and societal security
- Compliance with security and privacy standards and regulations
We work both with preventive security measures and with how organisations can manage and respond to cyber security incidents.
The increasing use of artificial intelligence presents new opportunities, but also new vulnerabilities. We study how AI affects the threat landscape and develop methods for safe and responsible use of AI in critical systems.
Our research targets sectors with high security requirements, such as energy, healthcare, transport, maritime, aviation, industry and public administration.
How we work
We collaborate closely with Norwegian industry, the public sector and international partners to solve concrete security challenges through applied research. Our work is knowledge-based and needs-driven, and covers the entire lifecycle of IT systems – from design to operation.
We combine technology, people and organisation, and develop methods, tools and decision support that can be applied in practice. We contribute with risk assessments, secure solutions, governance systems and competence building to strengthen trust in digital services.
What sets us apart?
What characterises the research group is the combination of technological depth and interdisciplinary understanding. Our researchers work at the intersection of cyber security, software engineering, societal security, economics and human factors.
We combine independent research with practical application, developing knowledge-based, tailored solutions grounded in up-to-date research and real-world needs. Our interdisciplinary approach provides holistic and long-term solutions that strengthen security and build lasting trust.
An international environment
The Cyber Security research group is part of an extensive international research environment and participates in a range of European research and innovation projects. The group collaborates with leading universities, research institutes, industry partners and public stakeholders across Europe.
We actively participate in EU-funded projects within cyber security, digital resilience and secure digitalisation of industry and society. Several of our researchers contribute to international standardisation processes, professional networks and expert groups.
The research group also collaborates closely with other research environments within SINTEF to develop comprehensive solutions in areas such as energy, maritime, healthcare, mobility and defence.
