Micro Optics

The Micro Optics research group develops miniaturised chip-based components for controlling light, such as micromirrors, photonic integrated circuits, microlenses, diffractive elements, and metasurfaces.

Our expertise

We develop optical components and solutions for applications where strict size, weight, or cost constraints apply. Examples include miniature sensors, medical technology, communication systems, advanced instrumentation, and quantum technologies. 

Our research has led to several successful spin-off commercialisations, including SensiBel commercializing an optical microphone and Tunable commercializing multi-gas analysers. Currently our technology platform is playing an important role in scaling quantum technologies utilizing structured photons and UV-wavelengths for neutral atoms.

The group has extensive expertise in applications relying on silicon MEMS and Electro-Optical modulation in combination with diffractive optics, metasurfaces and photonic integrated circuits (PIC). We work with both fundamental technology development and applied research in close collaboration with industry and leading universities.

Through interdisciplinary expertise in optics, materials technology, microfabrication, and system design, we are able to develop complete solutions, from concept and simulation to prototypes and testing. We help make optical systems smaller, more robust, and more cost-effective, while maintaining or improving performance.

How we work

We combine experimental research, modelling, and advanced cleanroom technology at NorFab MiNaLab’s combined R&D and production facilities to develop new micro-optical solutions. Our work is carried out in close dialogue with customers and partners to ensure that our research addresses concrete technological and societal challenges.

The research group employs optical simulation, design tools, cleanroom processes, and optical component characterisation. We develop and test prototypes in our own laboratories and pilot lines and collaborate with industrial partners to support scaling and industrialisation.

We typically work in multidisciplinary projects where the optical component is integrated into a larger system that enables new or improved measurements. We are capable of developing solutions for both niche applications, such as those operating in demanding environments, and mass-market applications, whether in medical diagnostics, ocean technology, process industries, or next-generation optical chips.

What distinguishes the Micro Optics research group from many other organisations is the combination of strong optical expertise and access to advanced infrastructure for microfabrication and integration. We can contribute throughout the entire value chain, from optical concept development to finished components and system demonstrators.

We work closely with other research groups at SINTEF specialising in microelectronics, sensors, materials technology, and digitalisation. This enables us to develop holistic solutions that combine optics with electronics, data analytics, and intelligent systems.

The research group also has extensive experience in tailoring research to industrial needs. We understand the challenges associated with manufacturing, robustness, cost, and commercialisation, and we help customers reduce development risk.

An international environment

Micro optics and photonics are rapidly evolving international research fields, and the research group participates in several European research and innovation projects. We collaborate with leading universities, research institutes, and industrial partners across Europe and internationally. For example, the Micro Optics group is part of Europe’s quantum pilot P4Q, which aims to develop and scale components for quantum technologies, and the group coordinates the EIC Pathfinder Open project OPTIPATH.

The research group is part of SINTEF’s strategic initiative on microchips and microsystems and contributes to the development of technologies that are important for Europe’s digital and industrial transformation. Our work includes research on photonic components, sensors, and integrated systems for future electronics and communications technologies.
