Thermal energy storage (TES) is one of the key technologies needed to make future energy systems more flexible, efficient and sustainable. Yet no single research group can address all the challenges alone. Developing and deploying TES requires expertise ranging from advanced materials and component design to system integration, industrial implementation and market adoption.
That is why the Gemini Centre for Thermal Energy Storage was created.
Since 2022, the centre has brought together researchers from NTNU and SINTEF with a shared ambition: to build a strong and coordinated Norwegian community for thermal energy storage. We believe that the best ideas emerge when experts from different disciplines meet regularly, challenge each other’s perspectives, and work together towards common goals.
Over the first four years, this collaboration has grown into a vibrant network spanning the entire TES value chain. Together, we have developed major research proposals, launched new projects, supervised students across institutions, shared laboratory infrastructure, strengthened international collaborations, and created the TES Workshop—now an established meeting place attracting more than 100 participants from research and industry every year. These achievements are not the result of a single project or organisation, but of continuous coordination and a shared commitment to advancing the field.
Following its re-appointment for the period 2026–2029, the centre continues its mission of strengthening thermal energy storage research, education and innovation in Norway. We do this through regular centre meetings, joint project development, student collaboration, shared research infrastructure, international networking and close dialogue with industry. Our partners contribute complementary expertise covering the entire value chain—from materials development and characterization to system integration, control strategies, pilot-scale validation and industrial deployment.
The Gemini Centre is more than a research collaboration. It is a platform for connecting people, ideas and opportunities. Whether you are a researcher, student, industry representative or policymaker interested in thermal energy storage, we welcome you to engage with our activities and help shape the future of flexible and sustainable energy systems.
