Our research areas

SINTEF works across the entire torrefaction value chain, from process development to technical and economic evaluation.

Process development and system analysis

  • Optimisation of process conditions
  • Scale-up and integration into industrial value chains
  • Modelling and system analysis

Characterisation of torrefied materials

  • Particle size distribution and morphology
  • Hydrophobic properties
  • Energy requirements for grinding
  • Proximate and ultimate analyses
  • Ash analysis
  • Decomposition kinetics
  • Product distribution studies
  • Combustion and gasification properties

Techno-economic analyses

  • Cost and profitability assessments
  • Value chain analyses
  • Climate and sustainability assessments

Laboratories and infrastructure

SINTEF has advanced laboratory infrastructure that enables torrefaction studies from micro to macro scale. We have developed a dedicated flexible torrefaction reactor for both fundamental research and the production of materials for further studies in gasification and combustion. In addition, we have dedicated reactors for research on wet torrefaction.
