New technology for better catch handling (DANTEQ)

The project will provide new skills and develop methods to optimize the handling of fish on board with regard to environmental impact and raw material quality.

Sustainable harvesting of wild fish is one of the major challenges in a global picture in terms of bringing to pass a sufficient quantity of fish. There is a considerable potential to harvest the 100 million tons, we catch today in a better way.

Norway is at the forefront in terms of technological equipment development and application of new harvesting concepts, but there are still significant challenges particularly in the interface between new technology and the catch treatment / first handling. Development of the technological competence base to provide new approaches to the problem, is the subject of considerable interest from industry.

The following three work packages included in the project:

  1. First handling system: This work package studies the effect of the method of taking on board, temporary storage of live fish and electrical stunning regarding energy use and raw material quality.
  2. Cooling and freezing systems: Here we study the effect of such systems have on the raw material quality. Various technological solutions to achieve the desired cooling effect is studied, such as Cells Alive System (CAS).
  3. Energy Systems: This work package will optimize the energy system on board with regard to energy consumption and environmental impact. Several alternatives exist such as conventional engines, hybrid and diesel-electric systems.

The project has participants from the fleet side, equipment and ship designers, who daily experience the challenges addressed in the project. In cooperation with these we will study the industrial case.

The project is financed by all partners listed on the right side.
