The development of artificial intelligence (AI), digital solutions, sensors and decision-support systems creates new opportunities in research, industry and healthcare. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly important to manage data in a secure, ethical and legally compliant way. Data from sensors, laboratories, industrial processes and digital platforms may contain personal, biological, environmental and confidential information. When such data is used in AI systems, new challenges arise related to privacy, ownership, intellectual property rights, data security, data sharing and transparency.
The project addresses these challenges by developing an integrated and practical framework for secure and responsible use of sensitive data in AI and sensor technologies. It builds on SAFEDATA and further develops principles for safe and ethical data management.
The aim is to ensure that privacy, security, ethical considerations, legal requirements and responsible AI are addressed throughout the entire data and technology development lifecycle from data collection and sharing to the development, testing, use and reuse of AI models.
This is particularly relevant as AI is being rapidly adopted in new areas, while the need to share data across research institutions, organisations and countries is increasing.
Expertise and use cases from the real wold
SINTEF contributes by combining expertise in AI, data management, ethics, cybersecurity and legal requirements with experience from research and industry projects. Real-world use cases from healthcare, aquaculture and industrial technology development provide a basis for testing and refining the approach. This ensures that the framework is practical and relevant across different types of sensitive data and AI-driven technologies.
