Safe and Sustainable Development of an AI Chatbot for German Primary Care

This project focuses on responsible integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into general practice in Germany, specifically through co-development of an AI-powered chatbot.

Contact persons

As Germany increasingly digitizes its healthcare system, attention is turning to the role of AI in daily clinical work.

Addressing Key Concerns: Relevance, Safety and Sustainability

This project aims to explore how AI tools, starting with an AI-powered chatbot, can support German general practitioners (GPs) while upholding professional responsibility, enhancing patient safety, and aligning with environmental sustainability goals. The chatbot will be linked to Deximed, a German medical platform for knowledge support. The first iteration of Deximed, was developed by the Norwegian health tech company Norsk Helseinformatikk.

User-Centered Development for Clinical Practice

The project employs a user-centered approach, gathering insights from German GPs through qualitative methods like workshop and focus group interviews. The aim is to understand practical needs, safety and ethical concerns, and functional requirements to ensure the AI chatbot meets real-world requirements and needs. Key areas of focus include usability, data responsibility and workflow integration.

Knowledge Base for Future Medical AI

The project is led by SINTEF Digital in collaboration with Deximed, and this initiative will establish a knowledge base for future development and evaluation of AI tools in healthcare. The insights will be valuable not only for Germany but for any context where generative AI could responsibly and safely support clinical decision-making.
