Resilience Across Borders – Circular Economy and Food System Preparedness in Jämtland and Trøndelag

The project develops new insights into how we can build greater robustness in the food system by fostering east–west collaboration between regions, rather than traditional north–south approaches.

Contact person

The Interreg project “Resilience Across Borders” strengthens food security in Trøndelag and Jämtland by connecting local resources and knowledge across the national border.  The knowledge will form the basis for future strategies on preparedness and sustainability, in close cooperation with research, advisory services, and industry.

Food security and preparedness in the Nordic region

The Interreg project “Resilience Across Borders” addresses the growing need for food security and preparedness in the Nordic region, driven by climate change, pandemics, and geopolitical instability. Today, food supply in both regions is vulnerable due to low self-sufficiency and heavy reliance on global supply chains. The project aims to improve food security and preparedness by applying principles of the circular economy—using resources smarter and more efficiently.

Sustainable and resilient food supply

Resilience Across Borders strengthens cross-border food security by developing circular business models and promoting collaboration between the regions of Jämtland Härjedalen and Trøndelag. By identifying resource flows, addressing border-related barriers, and increasing knowledge about circular economy, the project creates conditions for a more sustainable and resilient food supply in the region. With strong involvement from research, industry, and public authorities, the project will contribute to improved food security and climate adaptation.

SINTEF’s role and implementation

SINTEF leads the Norwegian part of the project and contributes research on circular value chains, barriers to cross-border collaboration, and knowledge development for municipal and regional food preparedness. The work is organized into five work packages and includes modeling, workshops, study visits, knowledge-sharing arenas, and digital dissemination.
