EDISON–Enhancing energy efficiency and flexibility in buildings through data-driven solutions

We will develop, demonstrate and monitor data-driven solutions that enhance the energy efficiency and energy flexibility of existing and new buildings for the decarbonization for the building sector.

Contact person

When it comes to effective deployment in real-life buildings, even the best control algorithms will not work properly if the building has not been prepared for it. This requires continuous commissioning including fault detection and monitoring of the building operation to ensure predictive control strategies function optimally.

The project will integrate a user-centric solution design to ensure that control solutions align with occupant needs and preferences, enhancing adoption and effectiveness.

Objectives

  1. Overcome real-building implementation challenges and socio-technical barriers, assessing/preparing buildings for proactive operation using SRI and Smart by Powerhouse frameworks (KN1, WP1).
  2. Develop guidelines on technical requirements for buildings and BASs for data-driven energy-efficient and energy-flexible building operation to improve the tendering and commissioning competence of relevant industry stakeholders for new buildings or renovation projects (KN1-3, WP1-3).
  3. Demonstrate data-driven solutions in real-life pilot buildings to optimize energy use in operational phases and detect potential faults in the technical systems (KN2, WP2).
  4. Develop and demonstrate rule-based predictive controls in real buildings, ensuring robustness and transferability to other buildings, and to gauge user acceptance and adoption (KN3, WP3).
  5. Disseminate results to relevant audiences (academic and industry) through a wide, systematic and scalable network and contribute to education of several Bachelor and Master of Science students (WP4).
