FAITH is a European research and innovation project that aims to provide organisations with practical methods and tools for assessing, monitoring, and improving AI trustworthiness throughout the AI lifecycle. The FAITH framework is developed and demonstrated in collaboration with large-scale pilots in critical domains.
Artificial intelligence has considerable potential to improve operations in critical infrastructure sectors. However, organisations must be able to trust AI systems before they can safely deploy them in operational settings. Within FAITH, SINTEF and Veas investigate how trustworthy AI can support wastewater treatment at the Veas treatment facility. The Veas pilot focuses on AI prediction models for biological nitrogen removal, a critical process for improving water quality and protecting the marine environment in the Oslo Fjord. The pilot serves both as a validation of the FAITH framework and as a real-world demonstration of trustworthy AI in industrial operations.
The pilot develops and evaluates AI prediction models that support denitrification, the biological process used to remove nitrogen from wastewater. These models are trained on historical and real-time process data from Veas and are intended to support operators and engineers in monitoring and optimising treatment performance.
The AI models developed in the pilot will, when sufficiently mature, be deployed in controlled field trials of AI-supported process control, where validated models contribute to automated adjustment of treatment parameters under human oversight.
The FAITH wastewater treatment pilot aims to demonstrate how trustworthy AI can help organisations adopt AI responsibly while delivering measurable benefits. The pilot also contributes to broader environmental goals by supporting efforts to improve the ecological condition of the Oslo Fjord through more effective wastewater treatment.
