In this project, we investigate the possibilities that quantum computing holds for solving complex optimization challenges in the defense sector. Our objective is to delve into different areas where quantum computing can be applied, taking into account that the goals within the defense sector differ from those in the industrial field, requiring further investigation. Collaborating with NeQst, we find a great opportunity to exchange methods and technical knowledge, leading to mutual advantages.

To efficiently progress, we follow an agile approach. Initially, potential use cases are suggested and evaluated by FFI to determine their relevance to the defense sector. Then, SINTEF assesses the suitability of these use cases for quantum algorithms. Through iterative rounds of evaluation, we discard use cases that do not meet the criteria and incorporate new ones for assessment. This process continues until a handful of strong candidates remain, which are subjected to in-depth analysis.

Our primary aim is to uncover the potential of quantum computing for the defense sector, with a particular focus on addressing high-impact optimization problems identified by FFI. By exploring and understanding the capabilities of quantum computing in the defense sector, we hope to contribute to advancements that can significantly enhance defense strategies and operations. This project serves as a stepping stone towards harnessing the power of quantum technologies for the benefit of national security and defense.
