XR-lab

XR stands for Extended Reality, which is an umbrella term that encompasses various immersive technologies that blend the physical and digital worlds, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). XR has numerous applications in various fields such as entertainment, education, healthcare, and training. It has the potential to transform the way we interact with technology, creating new opportunities for immersive experiences and enhancing our understanding of the world around us.

The XR Lab is operating at the department for Sustainable Communication Technologies of SINTEF Digital (Oslo) and its members are involved in several projects related to AR and VR, conducting research and performing tasks of software development and empirical evaluation (user experience and usability) regarding the application of AR and VR in various fields.

More specifically, in the XR Lab, we have worked or are currently working in the following technological areas:

  • Tabletop projection mapping
  • AR/VR digital twins
  • Metaverse data privacy
  • VR locomotion
  • VR text input
  • VR servicescapes
  • Audio AR
  • AR data visualization
  • AR building information modeling (BIM)

and we are involved in projects, such as:

  • Gaia Vesterålen (funded by RCN)
  • RESIST (EU)
  • VisD (internal SEP/RCN)
  • TrustworthyMetaverse (internal SEP/RCN)
  • Centre for Service Innovation (RCN)
  • InvizAR (internal SEP/RCN) and more.
