Two Summer Research Positions with ROSS Gemini Centre

The ROSS Gemini Centre is offering two funded summer researcher positions for 4th-year NTNU students within the topic of RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety). These internships are intended for students who wish to extend their summer research into a Master's thesis.

About ROSS Gemini Centre The ROSS Gemini Centre is a collaboration between several research groups at NTNU, NTNU Social Research, and SINTEF. Established in 2007, ROSS is one of the world’s largest research groups in safety and reliability studies. The centre focuses on the prevention of major accidents in technological systems that may cause damage to people, assets, and the environment.  Website: https://www.ntnu.edu/ross

Topic 1. Environmental/Ecological Risk Assessment

The student will explore existing environmental/ecological risk assessment methodology with any (explicit) connections to and/or integration with our “regular” risk assessment approaches (of acute events/technical safety/security/socio-technical systems, etc).

The topic will be defined within one of two areas of focus: reliability and cybersecurity of energy supply, or physical security of energy supply.

Supervisors: Prof. Ingrid Bouwer Utne (NTNU), Tom Ivar Pedersen (SINTEF) Location: SINTEF Ocean (Brattøra, Trondheim) Duration: 3 weeks (between June and August, to be agreed with supervisors)

Topic 2. AI and Safety

The student will explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can assist in risk analysis and enhance safety in complex systems, with specific focus on:

  • How can AI be used to assist risk analysis and improve safety (e.g. Using AI for early detection of emerging hazards and identifying unforeseen accident scenarios.)
  • How can we assure and verify that AI supported decisions are safe and trust-worthy?
  • How can AI be used to analyze the data related to risk and reliability studies in a more smart and efficient manner?

Supervisors: Prof. Jørn Vatn (NTNU), Shenae Lee (SINTEF) Location: SINTEF Digital (Strindvegen 4, Trondheim) Duration: 3 weeks (between June and August, to be agreed with supervisors)
