Department of Smart Sensors and Microsystems

Sensors represent the key enabling technology for the digitalisation process that society is currently undergoing.

Sensor connectivity enables operation of the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems in which objects and machines interact with each other and the physical world, either in close collaboration with, or entirely without the intervention of, humans. Many products will contain sensors that report on their condition and level of use, and provide information about their manufacture, repair, disassembly and final disposal. This enables the development of new data-based business models. Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy are entirely dependant on the quality of information derived from sensors, and sensor technology can be applied in various fields such as process, condition and environmental monitoring.
