Abstract
This report elaborates on how to prepare buildings for data-driven operation, with a spotlight on the solutions implemented in the ZEB Lab. As buildings evolve into dynamic, data-centric entities, the ability to harness measurement data for improved operations becomes paramount. The report begins by emphasizing the critical role of building automation systems (BAS) in the contemporary operation of energy-flexible buildings. It elaborates on how BAS integrates different systems such as HVAC, lighting, and energy management into a cohesive framework, optimizing energy usage and occupant comfort. The heart of this report lies in the innovative solutions deployed within the ZEB Lab. Established in 2021, the ZEB Lab has invested significant effort and resources regarding its building automation for energy-flexible operations. The report showcases the instrumentation and data flow of the ZEB Lab, linking the measurement data to a time-series database (InfluxDB). This setup facilitates real-time data collection, storage, and visualization, empowering the ZEB Lab to leverage data for algorithm-based decision-making. The report dives into the practical applications of this approach, showcasing how data is used to enhance energy efficiency and how the heating system can be operated in a more predictive manner. As digitalization transforms buildings, the report stresses the inevitability of data-driven applications. It sheds lights on the role of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in enabling continuous data-driven operations. Furthermore, it outlines API requirements and provides examples of energy-related data-driven applications under development in the ZEB Lab. This report underscores the significance of building automation, delves into challenges, and demonstrates how cutting-edge solutions can improve building operations, facilitating efficiency and demand side flexibility
