Material use and energy consumption of new production systems for salmon aquaculture

Abstract

This report investigates the differences in material use and energy consumption of new production systems for salmon farming including semi-closed/closed cages in the sea, landbased and offshore/exposed aquaculture through reviewing existing and planned concepts as well as the literature. In general, these production systems have higher energy consumption and material use than traditional open net cages, although there is variation between different concepts within the same production system category. The results presented in this report are based on data from existing and planned concepts, Fiskeridirektoratet’s experience sharing portal, companies’ annual reports, peer reviewed literature, scientific reports and master’s theses on this subject. There is little operational data available from existing concepts, and many concepts are still not built or deployed, which contributes to the uncertainty of the results presented in this report
