Challenges and developments in simulation of hydrocarbon recovery and CO2 storage

Abstract

Computer simulation of multiphase flow in porous rock formations has been conducted since the early 1950s. In this talk, I will review some of the mathematical characteristics of the underlying mathematical models and try to explain some of the numerical challenges that still remain. I will also outline a few ideas that have been used lately to make simulation technology more accurate, efficient, and versatile.
