Noise from Waste Water Pipes in Apartment Houses

Abstract

The noise emissions from waste water pipe installations often disturb neighboring households in apartment houses. The verticalization and concentration of buildings in the urban space, small areas for technical installations in the apartments beside the use of lightweight constructions increase the possibilities of unexpected noise from the plumbing installations. A project is carried out to get at state of the art of noise from waste water pipe installations in Norway beside collection of general experi¬ences. A small litterature investigation has been carried out beside investigation of reports from avai¬lable field and laboratory measurements. This paper presents general results from these investiga¬tions and some practical recommendations. Major part of field measurements has been carried out by our institute. Result analysis is focusing especially on noise levels in living rooms from toilet flushing in the apartment above. Results from some Nordic laboratory investigations have also been analysed. These measurements mainly focus on the noise emission from different piping materials and sound reduction with different types of pipe insulation and ceiling constructions. Important project results are given in SINTEF Byggforsk practical design sheet. Building Details 553.182. Noise from waste water installations (in Norwegian).
