The Anode Baking Furnace Process description and energy consumption

Abstract

Process description and energy consumption for the HAL anode baking furnace is given. Baking represents the most expensive step in the production of anodes for the aluminum industry. The total production capacity in Hydro (Norway) today is 290.000 tons/y. The total energy consumption in modern baking furnaces amounts to typically 4.8 – 5.2 GJ/ton (1.3-1.4  kWh/kg C), which is a combination of the following fuel sources:   • Oil or gas: 40 – 50 % • Pitch volatiles: 40 % • Packing coke: 10 – 20 %   The main challenge in heat recovery systems from the anode baking furnaces is related to the corrosive behaviour of the exhaust gas; tar, SO     Creativ.
