Abstract
By increasing the number of ocean structures, the possibility of collision between uncontrolled ships and ocean structures is rising. Drifting ships are also one of the main causes (together with erroneous navigation) for grounding incidents. One way to prevent some of these incidents, are to take control over the motion of the disabled vessel using emergency towing vessels (ETV). A review of IMO’s new requirements for emergency towing arrangements and operational procedures, shows that more work is needed to redesign present mooring systems/add additional arrangements for a quick and safe connection of an emergency towing line to an ETV.
