Joint Inversion and petrophysical characterization for improved CO2 monitoring at Ketzin and Svelvik Område

The aim of this collaborative project is to obtain a better understanding of geological CO2 storage and to improve monitoring capabilities.

This will be accomplished by improving the imaging of the CO2 plume and the quantification of the injected CO2 at the Ketzin pilot site in Germany. Our work will combine the methodologies and expertise from the German and Norwegian CO2 sites (Ketzin and Svelvik), and from GeoForschungs-Zentrum Potsdam (GFZ) and SINTEF. The central research tasks within this project are:

  • The integration of an Electromagnetic Resistivity Tomography (ERT) method that GFZ have successfully applied to CO2 monitoring at Ketzin, with SINTEF's Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) and joint inversion codes.
  • The application of 3D/4D FWI and joint-FWI-ERT inversions to existing and new Ketzin data vintages, and the optimization of these methods in preparation for the new repeat survey conducted during the German COMPLETE project.
  • The comparison and benchmarking of methods and results from the individual and joint inversions.
  • The petrophysical characterization of cap-rock- and reservoir core material. The results of this task will also be used in the joint inversion.
