The main goal is to define the content and the costs of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of possible phosphate mining off Namibia and on-shore phosphate processing.
The sea outside NAMIBIA is one of the most important and productive marine areas in the region, feeding millions of people with healthy seafood. The fisheries industry is the second most important contributor to the gross domestic product ( GDP) in Namibia and the fisheries industry may last forever and feed the world if it is managed in a sustainable way. The EIA will therefore have a particular focus on the impact on the marine environment, marine food chains and fisheries in the region. It is therefore important that this project has a strong local ownership taking care and ensuring that relevant information is obtained by approving and funding this Project.
To be able to conduct an EIA, a pilot project is needed to define a main project.
