Reducing societal risk in a changing climate using nature-based solutions in sustainable urban area development

Contact person

Our cities are growing denser, while it is also raining more frequently and intensely. If we do not take climate change into account when planning cities, stormwater will become an increasingly significant problem.

We know that nature-based solutions are well-suited to manage stormwater. Therefore, we are testing and developing:

  • valuation methods and documentation of nature-based solutions
  • risk analysis tools based on digital maps
  • customized data
  • scenario descriptions

We look at several different types of nature-based solutions, but particularly relevant are the reopening of streams, green roofs, permeable surfaces, and green infiltration solutions.

The project consists of a broad partnership including four active municipalities, each providing a case for the project's use. We will actively use these cases in our research to develop, test, and demonstrate the various components of the project.

The results from the project will be used by Norwegian municipalities who  conduct risk and vulnerability analyses and plan and implement stormwater measures.
