Battle over land and sea space
Bio-based industries are highly dependent on access to adequate production areas, while the battle over land and sea space is expected to harden in the years to come. In this project, we have developed an analytical framework and methodology reflecting the sector-spanning conflicts of interest and political dilemmas in need of handling in times of change and (green) transition.
Concern regarding future access to land
Operators within fisheries, aquaculture, forestry, agriculture and reindeer herding in Trøndelag express concern regarding future access to land. Their challenges are highly sector-specific, framed by technology in use and under development, ways of using land and sea space, market conditions, regional infrastructure and their impact on nature and ecosystems.
Steps to increase collaboration capacity
Land use conflicts are often connected to more overarching political dilemmas at the system level. Bio based value creation intersects with other important and legitime societal values. These are often complex and conflict-ridden issues, and points to the need to regionally build action capacity for multi-actor approach cooperation and co-creation of innovative solutions.
Conflicts of interest and political dilemmas
In this project, we describe operators in each bio-based industry’s perspectives thoroughly. Further, we discuss conflicts of interest and dilemmas in a sector-spanning analysis pointing to what regional authorities may do to support efficient land use and sufficient bio-based production land and sea space for the future.
