Managing the transition to a smart bioeconomy.

The Biosmart project objective is to identify and address a number of issues that are critical to the overall objective of promoting a "smart" bioeconomic transition across Norway.

Bioeconomy means sustainable production of renewable resources from land, fisheries and aquaculture environments and their conversion into food, feed, fiber bio-based products and bio-energy as well as the related public goods.

A transition to a smart bioeconomy implies a combination of changes in many socio-technical systems (such as forestry, farming, fisheries, industry, and bioscience sectors).

Devloping a smart bioeconomy, that is integrated, human-capital/technology based, and wisely implemented and managed requires a "smart" system for how these biosectors can work together. In a "smart" bioeconomy where bio-sectors work together the clustering of activities around multiple factors such as knowledge, resources, supply chains, and transportation links could assist in optimising the use of resources.

SINTEF's task in this prosject is to identify best locations for development of bioeconomic clusters by exploring locational preferences, requirements, major obstacles and bottlenecks for desirability of location. The results from this can be used as decision support by industry and government.

The BIOSMART project is a 4-year project funded by The Norwegian Research Council, and managed by Centre for Rural Research.
