Today's vessels are complex and gives the skipper many choices related to how the vessel is operated. Typical choices are which engines are running, vessel speed, how the energy is distributed, the use of electric motors for propulsion or direct coupling, propeller pitch, etc. With support from the Norwegian Research Council and the he Norwegian Seafood Research Fund, the shipowners Eros, Ervik & Sævik, Herøyhav and Kings Bay has together with SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture started the research project PurSense.
This project will develop tools to help the captain to operate the vessel as efficiently as possible. This will both reduce fuel consumption and vessel emissions of CO2 and NOx. This is therefore beneficial for both the companies and the environment.
The project will develop tools that can give advice to the skipper about how the vessel should be operated. Such advice can be based on the analysis of previous operations, as well as mathematical modeling of the vessel and the current operation.
The methods developed in this project will be generic and can be used on other vessels groups. This can be both fisheries, offshore and other maritime industries.
PurSense
A new tool is being developed at SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture, which will help skippers to save large amounts of fuel each year.
