ProAlge

The aquaculture industry will experience a lack of fish oil for feed production, and there is a need for alternative EPA and DHA sources. Marine microalgae can be a source of marine oils.

FHF has invited SINTEF Fiskeri og havbruk AS and UniResearch Miljø to prepare a state-of-the-art report on industrial production of marine microalgae as a resource in fish feed production. The project is organized as a series of visits to microalgae producers in North Europe to study industrial scaled production, participation in relevant conferences and contributions from significant research R&D groups in Europe. A workshop was held in Bergen during the first part of the project, with participants from national and international research groups, industrial stakeholders and aquaculture feed producers.

The final ProAlgae report will provide clear recommendations for industrial stakeholders who consider commercial scale production of marine microalgae. Focus is on the possibility of producing a resource with high EPA and DHA content at an economically viable cost, and the applicability of the resource in aquaculture feed industry. The report will be presented in an open workshop in Bergen at the end of April, with invited speakers from relevant areas.
