Ahus - Review and Projections of Activity and Capacity Requirements for Somatic Services

SINTEF has been commissioned by the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority conducted an activity and capacity analysis of Akershus University Hospital (Ahus HF). The mission has included mapping of activity and capacity for today's hospitals, the calculation of capacity needs in 2012, projections of activity in 2020 and calculation of capacity needs in 2020. We used a projection model that is being developed under the auspices of the Competence Network for hospital planning.

The report shows that Ahus HF, despite the high capacity utilisation had overcrowding of beds in large parts of the year 2012. For outpatient, surgical and diagnostic imaging device was sufficient capacity if you had a high capacity utilization. For day areas and dialysis capacity it was overcapacity.

The demographic changes over time reinforces this image. In 2020, a scenario with high conversion and transfer of activity to municipalities will not be sufficient to avoid the capacity of beds. With the exception of day areas and dialysis sites, there is an increased capacity needed for important functions such as surgery and imaging.

Ahus HF has implemented several measures to improve the situation. Especially for patient flow in the emergency department, there seems to be room for improvement
